A top official of the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), a Union public sector funding body on Tuesday reviewed the progress of power projects worth Rs. 230 crore underway in southern districts.
A. Veluchamy, Chief Project Manager of REC, held a meeting here with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) officials and took stock of the works being carried out in Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Theni and Ramanathapuram districts.
A. Nachadalingam, Chief Engineer (Distribution) of TNEB Madurai Region, gave a broad picture of the status of the works, official sources told The Hindu in Madurai on Wednesday. Superintending Engineers from all five districts took part in the meeting.
The REC is funding transmission and distribution projects in three categories — system improvement, pump set energisation scheme dealing with agricultural connections and intensive electrification with all categories of service connection.
The Madurai circle has been sanctioned a Rs. 72 crore worth project for commissioning a new 110 kV substation at Ellis Nagar besides installing additional power transformers at Samayanallur, Mattuthavani, T. Kallupatti, Melur and Usilampatti.
A sum of Rs. 48 crore has already been released for this project which will have underground cables, sources said.
Further, Rs. 10 crore has been sanctioned for two new 33/11 kV substations at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar and at Melakottai near Tirumangalam.
According to sources, works costing Rs.102 crore were sanctioned for Dindigul. A 230 kV substation has already been established at Renganathapuram in 2008. Two other 110 kV substations will come up at Vakarai near Palani and Chinnakamanpatti.
Installing transformers and related enhancement works will also be taken up in Dindigul which has already received Rs. 86 crore. The TNEB has also sought funds for improvement works at ten blocks in Ramanathapuram district.
Agriculture connections
Under the ‘Pump set energisation’ scheme, the last fiscal’s target of 2,000 new service connections in Madurai Region has been retained for this financial year also.
Also, Rs. 45 crore has been sought to create infrastructure for all category of connections. A sum of Rs. 31 crore has already been released.
