The Regional Transport Office here has collected tax and fine to the tune of Rs. 22.29 lakh during the past two months, according to Tirunelveli RTO K. Thangavelu.
In a statement, he said the officials attached to the RTO offices at Tirunelveli and Valliyoor checked 4,480 vehicles during January and February, and collected Rs. 16,43,107 as tax and Rs. 5,86,800 as fine. While 63 vehicles were fined for overcrowding, 96 vehicles were fined for overloading. As many as 183 vehicles were fined for not having valid emission certificate. Fitness certificate of 43 vehicles was cancelled.
On identifying ‘accident-prone zones’ in the areas, the RTOs sent letter to the National Highways Authority of India to install warning signboards at these places.
