Members of the Congress on Wednesday expressed disappointment over the district administration’s reluctance to safeguard what they termed ‘historic sanctity’ of the plaque for the statue of former Chief Minister Kamaraj at the GH Junction here.

After the statue was relocated for the purpose of creating space for construction of a traffic island, the pedestal of the statue remains without the plaque due to disagreement between the Congress and the Janata Dal (United) office-bearers over the inscription.

Insertion of name

“We are not laying claim to the statue unveiled during 1977 by late Prime Minister Morarji Desai when the Janata Party was in power. But, insertion of the name of Janata Dal (United) party in the recent years is not acceptable,” district unit president of Congress E.P. Ravi said.

‘Approach court’

“The Congress had accepted relocation of the statue only after the Highways Department assured that rectification would be made in the pedestal at the new location. But, now the district administration has taken a stand that no change will be made to the inscriptions of the plaque and it would continue to remain as Janata Dal. Now, the administration says that the Congress could approach the court over the issue. This is unfair,” Mr. Ravi said.
