Demanding roll back of the 50 paise a litre hike in diesel price, announced on Monday evening, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa urged the Centre to withdraw powers given to oil companies to increase the fuel price every month.

In a statement, Ms.Jayalalithaa said the hike was unjustified since, compared to last month, the rupee had strengthened and there has been decline in the price of crude oil in the international market.

Such increase in diesel price would fuel inflation and make essential commodities dearer. It would also pave the way for increase in the fare of the transport mode of the poor and middle class.
