Roads in bad condition

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST

Many arterial roads, be it Thillai Nagar Main Road, Shastri Road, or Bharathidasan Road, are in a bad condition. All of them need immediate blacktopping. Also, the corporation authorities should maintain them clean.

Gloomy picture

The HRD Ministry’s statistics testify the fact that the standard of Indian education is in a shambles. The statistics of 2014 reveals that most primary students are unable to identify numbers up to 9, do basic subtraction and division, read simple English, and 56 per cent of class 8 students are not able to divide three digit numbers by single digit numbers. Nearly 80 lakh children do not go to school at all. If this is the case how can we ever become a super power?

Put on seat belt

Though it is the responsibility of individuals driving the cars to wear seat belts, it is never followed. Nobody is penalised under section 177 of Motor Vehicle   Act, 1988. I appeal to the authorities to take stringent action against those who violate the law.

Parking woes

The report on parking woes of Thillainagar ( The Hindu , February 22) has not come a day soon. Added to this, the narrow platforms make an apology for pedestrian sidewalks and are fully encroached with every kind of small business. The arterial road has become a veritable death trap. It will be difficult to regulate parking of vehicles by levying fee and so is surveillance by CCTV. The way out is to de-notify the buildings without parking space for commercial use. The corporation should send notices to building owners to evict the establishments housed therein. Hospitals without parking space should not be spared too.

Nuisance meetings

After the by-elections, the political parties who put up a dismal show in the polls are conducting meetings. The venue permitted for them — South Devi Street, Station Road, in Srirangam — is a cause for nuisance and the time of the meeting is between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. During the latest meeting held at Station Road, passengers proceeding to board the train had to face difficulties. The sensible option is to use the playground of the government aided school.

Biometric

identity tags

Cattle stock is vital for the overall development of society. But it is not adequately monitored and regulated in Tiruchi in particular. Most roads are blocked by cows and buffaloes. Free roaming cattle population destroys agricultural produce and plants. Stray cattle are a cause for quarrels between farm/ house owners and stray cattle owners. The Animal Husbandry department should install biometric identity tags for cattle population in the city. Owners of cattle which stray into public space and private houses must be fined.

Congested road

Because of traffic congestion at Puthur Four Road and Vayalur Road, most vehicles from Ramalinga Nagar, pass through first main road of Ramalinga Nagar South Extension to reach Vayalur Road, leading to heavy traffic here. Hence the entry point of first main road from Vayalur Road must be cleared of parked vehicles which obstruct free movement of vehicles.

Save the bridge

The railway bridge near Srirangam railway station, connecting Srirangam and Tiruvanaikovil, was built 15 years ago. There are a number of piers with side abutments on eastern and northern ends. On both sides, side walls have been built and a road formed. In the intermediate piers at the expansion joints, there is wild vegetation growth in the gaps. The corporation authorities should remove the vegetation immediately to save the bridge.

Neglected Tiruchi

After gauge conversion and within two years, four new trains are operated from Mannargudi to various destinations whereas Tiruchi is being neglected for the past 10 years. More trains are operated on main line than chord line. Hence commuters from Tiruchi do not get accommodation. This anomaly must be corrected and equal number of trains must be operated from Tiruchi on the chord line.

Machine for cleaning tamarind

The news item ( The Hindu , February 17) on the new equipment developed by TNAU in its Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Kumulur, for cleaning raw tamarind was extremely interesting. It is a great step in reducing the difficulties encountered while doing manually.

Bypolls in Srirangam

The results of the bypoll revealed two important factors: the popularity of the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has made her nominee win by a massive margin, and ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy who contested as an independent candidate obtained the largest number of votes among all the 22 independent candidates. Hats off to the activist, who decided to contest the bypoll all the way from Chennai not taking his age into consideration.

Road crossing

The public find it difficult to cross the road outside the junction (from roundtana to old Thiruvalluvar bus stand) because of the long barricades put up in the middle of the road without any gap. Although the arrangement helps in free flow of traffic, one or two gaps would help the public to cross the road without difficulty.

Bus service

City buses to BHEL, Thuvakudi, via E.B Road from Chathiram bus stand are very few. It would be convenient for residents of E.B. Road, Butterworth Road, Andar Street, Rockfort, and Chinnakadai Street if more buses are operated through this route. The residents need not board the bus from Chathiram bus stand, Teppakulam, or Main Guard Gate. Will the authorities consider this favourably?

Janaki S. Raj,

Tiruchi

Adequate city bus service via E.B. Road from Chathiram bus stand to Thuvakudi will be of great use to residents of this area. The buses should be operated in both directions.

 Service by PSK

At the Passport Seva Kendra, once we are there in the time slot allotted, we are ushered to the counter concerned almost immediately. From there we pass through other counters in a span of 15 minutes. We are properly guided by the PSK employees. We were told we would receive our passports in a week’s time, but we received them in just three days. Hats off to the helpful and courteous employees of PSK.
