“Rise in sea level will hit five districts in Cauvery delta region”

December 09, 2010 12:05 am | Updated 12:05 am IST - CHENNAI:

A one-metre rise in sea level will seriously hit small islands, coastal and delta regions and low-lying areas, said Sujatha Byravan, Senior Researcher, Centre for Development Finance on Wednesday.

Delivering the special address at the nationwide series of media seminars ‘Media Minds 2010,' organised by the International School of Business&Media (ISB&M) School of Communication, she said that the change in sea level could be attributed basically to melting of glaciers and expansion of water. It would also have other kind of impact. “The sea level rise by one metre in Tamil Nadu will hit five districts in Cauvery delta region and other states such as Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa and will affect infrastructure facilities such as power plants.”
