All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday described her party's win in the Pudukottai by-election as a recognition of “accomplishments and good governance” of the State government in the last one year.

In a statement, she said that though the votes of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which did not contest, went against the AIADMK, the fact that her party secured 71 per cent of the votes polled on its own demonstrated that people were with the AIADMK.

Recalling that the Communist Party of India (CPI), as a constituent of the AIADMK-led front, obtained 47 per cent of votes polled in the 2011 Assembly elections, she said her party now got 71 per cent of the votes, an increase of 24 percentage points.

The vote share of the Opposition was 29 per cent, marking a substantial decline in its vote bank.
