Manholes constructed under the underground drainage project in recent months are on the verge of caving in at some places in and around Soorampatti, giving rise to apprehension about the sturdiness of the concrete structure constructed elsewhere in the city limits.

According to residents’ associations, the weakness of the structure is because of the hurried pace of construction.

The road re-laying and manhole construction works were taken up by the Corporation late, due to delayed sanction of funds by the State Government.

According to a senior official, construction of manholes require at least 10 days for gaining sturdiness since the curing process is involved.

On their part, the contractors say they are required to cut down on the duration since they have been given tight deadlines. They are understandably under compulsion to complete the work at the earliest to make the roads under repair fully usable at least a week before the Assembly elections.

However, indications are that the completion time will only get delayed further since the executing authorities are not inclined to make the final settlement until the contractors re-do the works wherever required.
