They were rescued from the chains of labour several years ago. On Friday, some of these children came out with flying colours as they scored well in the Class XII examinations.

Eleven of the 12 students — five boys and six girls — who were rescued as child labourers, went past the finishing line.

Purushotaman was rescued by officials when he was laying a road at Panapakkam six years ago. “In the board exam results published today [Friday], Purushothaman scored 1,034 marks. We had admitted him in the child labour special school at Arunthathipalayam and later shifted him to the Panapakkam Boys Higher Secondary School,” said M. Rajapandian, project director, Child Labour Project, Vellore.
