Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday denied reports that Parvathi, mother of LTTE leader V. Prabakaran, had rejected the conditions laid down by the State government for providing her treatment in Tamil Nadu.
He was replying to Congress whip Peter Alphonse, who drew the attention of the House to the reports in this regard in some sections of the media.
“The government has not received any communication officially or personally from Ms. Parvathi that the conditions are unacceptable to her,” he said.
The government had not laid down stringent conditions. It had said that she should be under its protection.
“Government security does not mean that she will be in jail,” he said, adding that the State was only anxious that she received proper medical care. “No stringent conditions were laid. The only condition is that she should not contact persons who have links with banned organisations,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.
The conditions were laid down because her stay in the State should not be utilised for any political purpose.
“We did not say she will be provided treatment only if she abides by the conditions. We wanted her to consider it as an advice. We said she could come over here. We said we will admit her in hospital and the best doctors will attend on her.
“We kindly requested her not to give room for any attempt to politicise her stay in the State. It is not even an advice. It is only a request and the Centre has happily granted permission for her stay,” he said.
The Chief Minister took a dig at newspapers that had carried the reports. “Earlier if news was published it would be taken very seriously. Now it has come to a stage that media reports are not taken seriously.”
Earlier, Mr. Alphonse said some persons who wanted to come to Tamil Nadu along with Ms. Parvathi were upset because of the conditions laid down by the government.
