Reopen Tamarikulam Park: residents

March 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NAGAPATTINAM:

People from all walks of life have urged the municipal administration to reopen the recently renovated Tamarikulam Park, situated in the heart of the town for their benefit.

As part of beautification of Nagapattinam town the district administration had decided to give a facelift by renovating the “Tamaraikulam” at the estimated cost of Rs. 3 crore, including Rs. 1.40 crore under the State Finance Commission’s Operation and Maintenance Gap Filling Fund in 2012-13 and the remaining amount from numbers of philanthropists.

Nagapattinam municipality had laid the foundation stone for the renovation work on April 2013. It had completed the construction of compound walls on four sides of the tank, pathway, and dredging work to the depth of 10 feet, lawn and landscape by August 2014.

The tank had been filled with Cauvery water through an inlet situated in the southwest of the tank. Similarly, there was an outlet in southeast part of the tank to let out water in case, if the tank would overflow during the effective onset of monsoon in future.

“Moreover, as the opening of Tamaraikulam park would attract hundreds of people from various States in the country who visit famous churches at Velankanni, Nagore dargha, and Sikkal Singaravelar Murugan temple, the district administration should ensure early opening of the park,” said secretary of Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Council G. Aravind Kumar.

The renovation of the tank would be beneficial in many ways to the people. It would serve as rainwater harvesting system which would improve the water table and prevent the seepage of seawater.

The officials in the municipality said all the renovation works had been completed. Only the inlet and outlet connection for recycling the water in the tank was left and it would be done once the underground drainage system was accomplished.
