Relay battered roads: MDMK

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The students’ wing of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has forwarded petitions to Department of Highways demanding re-laying of badly damaged roads in the district after the northeast monsoon last year.

In the petition, T.M. Rajendran, secretary of MDMK’s students’ wing said the stretches between Tirunelveli – Vickramasingapuram, Tirunelveli to Azhagiyapandiapuram, Sankarankovil – Rajapalayam, Sankarankovil – Kovilpatti via Kazhugumalai, Nanguneri – Uvari, Ambasamudram – Tenkasi, Sankarankovil – Thiruvenkatam, Sankarankovil – Surandai, Thevarkulam – Kazhugumalai, Tirunelveli – Kadayam via Mukkoodal, Sankarankovil – Sivagiri via Karivalamvanthanallur etc. were in the worst shape.

Struggle

Consequently, road users, particularly women, children, pregnant women and aged people are struggling a lot even as they traverse these hostile stretches besides causing wastage of fuel and wrecking vital spares of vehicles.

“While the major roads are in the worst shape, there is no need to elaborate the condition of rural roads. Hence, the Department of Highways should take immediate steps for re-laying these roads,” Mr. Rajendran said.

The petition has been forwarded to Secretary, Department of Highways, Tirunelveli Collector, and Chief Engineer of Department of Highways.
