Enforce traffic

rules strictly

Viewed in the context of the appalling frequent traffic jams and fast-increasing number of avoidable road accidents that we come across almost every day, the reports published under the headlines “Synchronising and regulating traffic at signals” and “Strict enforcement can bring down road accidents” ( The Hindu , July 4), assume great significance. Even when there are electronic signals and timers at all key road junctions, we find many impatient vehicle users jumping the signals. Many a time, at some road junctions with the sign board ‘free left’, this indication and the good facility made available through it become meaningless, as many vehicles, supposed to move straight on the main road, block the lane on the extreme left. Strict enforcement of the rules has become an imperative need in such circumstances, to ensure road safety and smooth movement of vehicles, whose number has increased in leaps and bounds in recent times.

Kudos to corporation

Ever since the news of death of two persons at Kovaipudur believed to be due dengue, authorities of civic body swung into action with prophylactic measures. A team of corporation personnel visits all houses once in a week with the liquid and pour them into the water tanks, advise residents to prevent water stagnation, record how many syntex tanks, flower pots are there in each house and advise the owners to maintain them cleanly.

Besides this, conservancy inspector personally sees for themselves how this is done.

Apart from this, the team visits individual houses with the machine for fumigation purpose.

Unfortunately, some of the residents are reluctant to permit them to fumigate due to the fear whether they are really from corporation. I congratulate the Corporation for their earnest steps against the dreaded dengue.

Welcome move

Karthi, MLA, has set an example by visiting the ward area recently to know their requirements. This is a welcome move. It is suggested that other MLAs also visit the respective areas frequently and interact with the residents and residents’ welfare associations and arrange for maintenance of their wards.

Stray dogs menace

The stretch from Gandhima Nagar main road to FCI Road is spotted with pack of stray dogs. In the morning there are at least 25 to 30 dogs. Most of them chase kids. Even ladies frequenting the shops nearby have to be very cautious.

The authorities concerned should take immediate steps to remove them.

No towel provided

I travelled from Coimbatore to Chennai by Nilgiri express recently in 3rd AC and I was given a hand towel along with pillow, blanket and bedspread. But while returning from Chennai in the same train no towel was provided.

Appeal to railways

The continued operation of the Mayiladuthurai-Mysore overnight express train via the circuitous route of Karur-Erode-Salem, instead of the shortest route of Karur-Namakkal-Salem is a matter of concern for the commuters of Namakkal. If the train is operated via Namakkal, the commuters can reach the end destination one hour in advance. I request the Railways to take steps for running the train in the Karur-Namakkal-Salem section.

Overnight

express train

The demand of the Namakkal MP P. R. Sundaram to extend Chennai Egmore – Salem overnight express train to Karur via Namakkal was a just one. This will provide Namakkal people yet another train for reaching Chennai. At present, they have only the Palani – Chennai Express for reaching Chennai. The MP should take up the matter with the Railway Ministry.

Death of elephants

The death of half a dozen elephants within a gap of ten days in the western districts of the state makes a sad reading. This has shocked all sections of society. The Forest Department should take effective step by intensifying patrolling to prevent the elephants from entering into civilian area and also moving along the railway track.

Shocking

The marketing of tobacco products in the shops near the educational institutions is very shocking. This will only destroy the future of our younger generation. I welcome the recent raids conducted by the Food Safety department officials and seizure of the banned products. All those involved in this trade should be punished severely. The punishment should serve as a warning to others.

Kiran Priyatharshine,

Salem

Railway unions thanked

The people have heaved a sigh of relief with the Railway workers unions withdrawing their indefinite strike. The strike would have paralysed the normal life across the country. I thank the Railway unions for the same. The Railway Ministry should come forward to discuss the problems raised by the unions and settle them immediately.

Syed Shanawaz,

Omalur.
