DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi on Friday questioned how the ‘Ram Rajya Rath Yatra’ was allowed to enter Tamil Nadu, saying the rath was modified in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and wondered whether or not the rule of law was being followed in the State.
In a Facebook post, Ms. Kanimozhi referred to The Hindu’s report titled ‘Yatra breached rules: officials’, and said the rath should have been seized the moment it entered Tamil Nadu.
“But instead of seizing the rath for violation of rules, the State police gave it protection and was being party to a force that is trying to destroy the social and secular fabric of the State,” she wrote.
The MP also referred to an incident in Tiruchi where a police inspector chased a two-wheeler and knocked down a couple as the rider was not wearing a helmet. “The police were responsible for the death of a woman, but are giving protection to a vehicle that has violated the rules, leading to doubt whether the rule of law exists in Tamil Nadu,” she said.
Ms. Kanimozhi urged the authorities to immediately take cognisance of the report and seize the rath.
