Rape victims get compensation

The Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC) management handed over two separate demand drafts for Rs. 2.5 lakh each to be given to the two girl inmates of the home run by the church, who were raped near the home by a youth on June 11.

The two girls, aged 11 and 9, respectively, were raped at knife point by V. Veeran alias Veerasamy (24) of Valparai on the terrace of a building close to the home.

The demand drafts were submitted in the Mahila Court on Thursday in the presence of Judge M.P. Subramanian. The compensation was given as directed by the judge in his judgment on December 24, 2014.

Recovery Act

He also directed the district administration to invoke the Revenue Recovery Act to recover the amount by liquidating the properties of TELC if it failed to pay the amount in 30 days.

The Court also appointed lawyer K. Shanmugananthan as Legal Commissioner to look into the welfare of the two girls.

Ms. P. Sarojini said that on Thursday the judge directed that interest from the compensation be used for the girls’ education.

The judge has also asked the Legal Commissioner to identify natural guardians of the minor girls and to ensure that the money was used for the purpose it was ordered to be spent.

Cash deposited

The State Government already deposited Rs. 5 lakh for each victim shortly after the incident came to light. With the compensation given by the TELC, the victim girls have a fixed deposit of Rs. 7.5 lakh each which they could withdraw when they turn 18 years of age.

The girls are living with their parents and are continuing school education.
