Rallies mark Voters’ Day

“Voluntary enrolment is the right of every one”

Rallies, seminars and distribution of EPI cards marked the National Voters Day in the districts on Sunday.

Addressing Voters Day celebrations in Dindigul, Collector T.N. Hariharan said voluntary enrolment was the democratic right of every one. Citizen’s participation in democratic election commenced with registration of names in voter list and ended with voting.

Earlier, students took out a rally from Collector’s camp office to St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School.

Theni

“Only with the participation of the public that we can achieve and strengthen democracy,” said Collector N. Venkatachalam who inaugurated the Voters Day celebrations in Theni. The main purpose of the day was to enrol all eligible voters in electoral roll. Students should propagate the importance of the enrolment as voters among the people, he said.

Ramanathapuram

In Ramanathapuram, functions were organised in all the 743 polling stations falling under four Assembly segments in the district and colour EPI cards were distributed to new voters.

Special Tahsildar (Elections) B. Ilangovan said about 80 per cent of the 24,152 new voters were given the cards.

Electoral Registration Officer R. Ram Pratheepan presided over a function organised at the district headquarters and distributed prizes to students who won prizes in oratorical, essay and drawing competitions organised to create voters’ awareness.

Booth-level officers who had enrolled more number of new voters and campus ambassadors, who encouraged college students to enrol themselves as voters were also honoured with certificates.

Sivaganga

In Sivaganga, Collector T. Munusamy and Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis flagged off a voters’ awareness rally and distributed EPI cards to new voters at a function.

Similar functions were organised at all the 1,273 polling stations located in four Assembly segments in the district and the new voters were distributed EPI cards, V. Krishnaveni, Special Tahsildar (Elections), said. More than 60 per cent of the 28,104 new voters were given the cards, she said.

Virudhunagar

Collector V. Rajaraman administered a pledge to students of colleges in Virudhunagar on the importance of voting.

As many as 100 new colour EPI cards were distributed by the Collector and Superintendent of Police S. Maheswaran to new voters who had enrolled themselves during the recent summary revision.
