As the low pressure area over the south-west Bay of Bengal slowly moves westwards, several places in south Tamil Nadu are likely to get rainfall for two days till Monday.
After a lull that lasted for over 10 days, the weather system is expected to revive the northeast monsoon over the State.
According to the Meteorological department, the low pressure area over the south-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining the equatorial Indian ocean persists with a cyclonic circulation. This is expected to influence rainfall in areas, including Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari for two days. A few places may even experience heavy rainfall.
Light to moderate
S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said some places in north Tamil Nadu would have light to moderate rainfall. But the intensity of the rainfall would depend on the orientation of the weather system, moisture condition and wind speed. If the system near Sri Lanka maintains intensity or strengthens further, more places in north Tamil Nadu may get rainfall.
“Chennai too may experience light to moderate rain till Monday. We are monitoring the system that is steadily moving towards the Sri Lanka coast. It is normal for mist to form during the break phase of monsoon as there is less rainfall,” he said. After November 7, the rainfall deficit in the State began widening due to sporadic rainfall. The State’s seasonal rainfall is 27 cm against its average of 34 cm since October 1.
Meteorologists expect the weather system to bridge the shortfall.
The department also forecasts that surface wind will be strong and gusty at times till Monday.
