April 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - SALEM:

Salem city and other parts of the district experienced sharp showers for about an hour on Saturday evening.

The rainfall inundated many low level areas such as Kichipalayam, Tiruchi main road, Nethimedu, Hasthampatti, Suramangalam main road, old bus stand, new bus stand, and also the main thoroughfares affecting traffic. Rain water entered some of the houses in Manianur area in the city affecting the normal life of people.

The hill station of Yercaud continued to receive rainfall and the sky remained overcast throughout the day.

About 20 percolation ponds in Edappadi and Poolampatti areas have already filled up. The farmers are hopeful that this will help in improving the groundwater level and also the water position in the open wells.

The groundnut crop standing on about 50 acres in Oodakattur and Pillukurichi were submerged in water, so also the standing cholam and ellu crop on about 100 acres in Koodakkal and Kuppanur. Thanks to the absence of heavy winds, the plantain crop on about 500 acres in Morasapatti, Kallukkadai and Pillukurichi did not suffer any damages.
