Heavy rain in various parts of the district since Saturday has kept the administration on their toes.
Coonoor recorded 180-mm rainfall during the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Trees were uprooted at many places. However, no major damage was reported, according to Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik.
She told The Hindu here on Sunday that a few houses in Coonoor and Kotagiri were partially damaged.Officials have been instructed to assess the damage and provide relief without delay. The rains triggered minor landslips in a number of places. Station Superintendent B. Padmanabhan said that owing to a landslip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway track, between Wellington and Aruvankadu, the first service of the day between Coonoor and Ooty was hit. However, other train services were maintained.
The Superintending Engineer, Nilgiri Electricity Distribution Circle, T. Haldorai, said that at several places there was frequent power disruption on account of trees falling on overhead cables. Cold weather and overcast conditions subjected tourists to inconvenience.
