Rain in Tirunelveli; gale uproots trees

April 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

After a hot forenoon, several parts of the district experienced sporadic rainfall in the afternoon on Friday. Accompanied by heavy wind and lightning, the sudden rain brought cheers to the residents who suffered a lot from sweltering heat in the forenoon.

At the same time, the showers became a bane as the gale uprooted several trees across Palayamkottai. Fearing uprooting of electric poles or snapping of power cables by the gusty winds, power supply to several parts of the city was suspended as the wind velocity remained high for a while.

Struck by lightning

As the district witnessed widespread rain accompanied by heavy wind and lightning, T. Kuruvammal (50) of Kulaiyaneri under Surandai police station limits and her cow were struck dead by lightning on Friday.

Kuruvammal was bringing her cow back from the field when the incident happened.

Surandai police have registered a case and are investigating.
