Food Safety officials and municipal authorities conducted a surprise raid on hotels, restaurants and roadside eateries in Meenakshipuram here on Tuesday.

The officials, headed by Deputy Food Safety Officer Salodisan, seized and destroyed food items prepared and kept in unhygienic condition.

Expired packets of food ingredients, found in the kitchens of some hotels, were destroyed.

The officials also seized food items that did not have proper labels and adulterated tea powder.

An investigation was launched to find out the origin of adulterated tea powder.

A few hotels were given two weeks’ time to improve the hygiene standard of the kitchens.

Caution notices were issued to some shops for not maintaining hygiene on their premises.
