The People’s Welfare Front comprising the CPI, CPI (M) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has decided to contest in the by-election to the R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency.
“We will enter the fray. The leaders of the alliance will meet and decide who among us will contest in the election,” CPI (M) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan said on Friday.
VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan said that he had a meeting with Mr. Ramakrishnan and the two parties unanimously decided to contest the election. “Since CPI secretary R. Mutharasan was not in Chennai, we could not take a final decision,” he said.
Losing allies
The VCK had fielded educationist V. Vasanthi Devi as its candidate in the 2016 Assembly elections.
Earlier, in the 2015 by-elections, senior CPI leader C. Mahendran contested as the candidate of the alliance.
Even though MDMK leader Vijayakant’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and the TMC were part of the PWF in the 2016 election, the three parties left the alliance subsequently.
