In a move apparently linked to the ongoing revamp of the police administration in the Union Territory of Puducherry, the Central government has appointed an officer in the rank of Director General of Police as the head of Puducherry police. The Union Territory was hitherto administered by an Inspector General of Police rank officer.
An order to this effect has been passed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). As per the order, P. Kamaraj, a 1987 AGMU cadre Indian Police Service officer, will assume charge as Director General of Police, Puducherry. The existing chief of Puducherry police R.S. Krishnia, Inspector General of Police, has been transferred to New Delhi.
The move is seen as a sincere attempt to cleanse the police administration, the image of which has taken a severe beating following allegations of police-criminal nexus.
The appointment comes in the aftermath of an exclusive interview to The Hindu by Lt. Governor Virendra Kataria on the law and order situation in Puducherry.
Mr. Kamaraj, a native of Tamil Nadu, has received President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service on the occasion of Republic Day, 2011.
The officer served in various capacities in Delhi Police. He also served in Lakshadweep as Superintendent of Police and Andaman & Nicobar Island as Deputy Inspector General of Police.
He had also served in the Central Bureau of Investigation in the year 2004 as Deputy Inspector General of Police. As Deputy Director (Interpol), he successfully supervised several extradition and deportation matters. Significant among them were extradition of Abu Salem. He is currently Special Commissioner of Police, Vigilance, New Delhi.
