In a statement, MLA K. Krishnasamy said it was an attempt to disrupt peace in southern districts, free of caste violence

Puthiya Tamilagam founder-president and MLA K. Krishnasamy has condemned vandalism of statues of B.R. Ambedkar and Immanuel Sekaran at Chinna Udaippu and Perungudi on Tuesday. In a statement, he said it was an attempt to disrupt peace in southern districts, free of caste violence.

The leader also suspected a conspiracy to divert the attention of the public from issues and scandals rocking the State. The miscreants involved in the act of damaging the statues should be arrested immediately, he said and called upon Dalits to remain calm. If there was a lethargic attitude on the part of the police, a State-level protest would be organised, he said.

Bus services suspended

The desecration of statues led to suspension of bus services to sensitive areas from 9 p.m. on Tuesday. After holding talks with the agitators, Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan and Collector Anshul Mishra said that the representations would be forwarded to the State government. At around 6 p.m., a road blockade stir came to an end. The demands included installation of bronze statue, providing iron grills for statues, and enhancing security.

Meanwhile, three buses, including two in the suburbs and one in Melavasal area, were stoned by miscreants. Two persons were nabbed by police on bandobust near the Muthu Bridge. As a precautionary measure, the suspension of bus services would continue till Wednesday morning. Depending on the situation, the services would be resumed, officials said.

Many organisation picketed roads at 14 locations since morning. Advocates representing Dalit organisations demanded action against the miscreants. “B.R. Ambedkar should be seen as a national icon and not confined to a small circle.”

An officer said that bandobust to statues was being given since 6 a.m. on Tuesday and that it would continue.
