A workshop to identify the problems in developing the city into a ‘Smart Tirunelveli’ that can be solved by harnessing technology was organised on Anna University’s regional campus here on Saturday.

The State government’s Entrepreneurship Development Innovation Institute (EDII), in association with Coimbatore-based Forge that activates innovative products or business ideas into investable startups organised the workshop, in which senior representatives from various government departments and urban local bodies participated to share with the technocrats and their teachers the technical issues they are facing in the execution of new development programmes.

In turn, the technocrats, who be would be appropriately funded for the right invention, should discover and fabricate the new user-friendly, cost-effective product that should be able to effectively address the technical issues. “This is the objective of conducting this event here in Tirunelveli… While paving way for a few successful startups, the programme should sow the seeds for making this city smarter by providing effective workable solutions to the day-to-day issues,” said Viswanathan, Chief Executive Officer, Forge.

Collector Sandeep Nanduri said the participants should provide cost-effective solutions for solid and liquid waste management programmes, effective drinking water distribution, street-lighting, construction of cost-efficient household toilets to eradicate open defecation, mosquito breeding etc.

Dean, Anna University’s Regional Office – Tirunelveli, G. Sakthinathan and Deputy Director of EDII, Chennai, R. Shiva Shankar spoke. City Engineer and Commissioner (in-charge), Tirunelveli Corporation V. Narayanan Nair and other senior officials of various government departments participated.
