April 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - THANJAVUR:

Irate public disappointed over the sudden demolition of a makeshift Vinayakar shrine constructed on land belonging to the Highways Department protested the act of officials at Motojiappa Chavadi on Thanjavur-Pattukkottai Road near here on Thursday.

The makeshift temple had come up on the spot where a temple had existed till it was pulled down a few years back when Highways Department constructed a road over-bridge in the area.

Public claim that the officials had then promised to re-construct the temple but had not delivered on their promise following which the public themselves had put up the shrine.

But early on Thursday, officials backed by police arrived and pulled down the makeshift tin-roofed structure that housed a Vinayakar idol much to the chagrin of the public who staged a protest over the act of the officials.
