Proposal mooted for upgrade of Perundurai into Municipality

November 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - ERODE:

A proposal has been forwarded by the Perundurai Town Panchayat to the State Government recommending its upgrade as a municipality.

Revenue

The ‘Selection Grade’ Municipality fulfils the requisite norms pertaining to population and revenue. While the population is around 23,000 as per 2011 census, the annual revenue has exceeded Rs. 8 crore mark, about Rs. 2 crore more than the required extent.

By convention, a town panchayat will apply for Municipality status after attaining the ‘Special Grade’. But, when the local body with ‘Special Grade’ status has the necessary revenue and population, there is no hitch in applying directly for Second Grade Municipality status, official sources said.

Though Karumandisellipalayam Town Panchayat is contiguous with Perundurai, the scope for merging the two local bodies is limited since concurrence of the Central Government would be required.

In desiring for Municipality status, the Perundurai Town Panchayat is looking forward to securing increased funding and strengthening administrative machinery through beefing up manpower. Civil works and other developmental activities could be implemented without delay since an exclusive Municipal Engineer and other technical staff will be posted. At present, one Junior Engineer has to approve and oversee works in a handful of panchayats due to which there is enormous delay in implementation of works.

The boundaries of the wards will be redrawn in the event of upgrade of Perundurai into a Municipality. However, prospects for early transformation of the local body, as things stand, are not possible with elections to the State Assembly only a few months away, sources added.
