M. Anandakrishnan, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT, Kanpur, on Saturday appealed to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to put an end to the “mindless expansion” of engineering colleges in the State.
Inaugurating a TIFAC-CORE centre, built and donated by 1981-85 batch of Alagappa Chettiar College of Technology in Karaikudi, he said it was painful to notice the massive proliferation of engineering colleges in the State at a time when a majority of them did not have even 30% of faculty members.
Taking strong exception to the approval granted to new engineering colleges in the State when engineering counselling was almost over, Mr. Anandakrishnan said several students, who enrolled in arts and science colleges, were wooed by the newly approved colleges, most of which did not have enough infrastructure. Kumar Jayant, Commissioner, Technical Education, said the process of establishing national knowledge network was on the verge of completion.
