Project to tone up irrigation systems in Cauvery delta

CWC gives in-principle clearance for Rs.11,420-crore project

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has accorded in-principle clearance for a Rs.11,420-crore project to improve the irrigation systems in the Cauvery delta region, Public Works Minister O. Panneerselvam informed the Assembly on Thursday.

The project, ‘Improvements and Rehabilitation of irrigation systems in Cauvery basin for efficient water management’, would have components such as rehabilitation of the systems in the Cauvery basin and in the sub-basins. “In the first phase, clearance of the Central Water Commission for a detailed project report for the Grand Anaicut canal system will be obtained, and it is proposed to be taken up for implementation in the current year,” the policy note presented by the Minister said.

This apart, a project would be launched to mitigate climate change in the Cauvery delta region.

It would include measures to mitigate seawater intrusion, to be taken up at a cost of Rs.1,560 crore. The first phase would commence this year. The entire project will have the assistance of the Asian Development Bank.

The Minister said the work to establish a medical college and hospital at a cost of Rs. 123.30 crore in the Omandurar government estate in Chennai would be completed by June next.
