A preacher was charred to death in a road accident near Nalattinputhur in the district on Monday.
Police said J. Geoffrey Samuel (56), a preacher from Perungudi in Chennai, had come to Palayamkottai to visit his relatives. The preacher was going to Madurai airport to pick up his younger sister, who was coming from Mumbai, when the accident occurred.
When he was crossing Nalattinputhur around noon, he lost control over the car he was driving, and the vehicle dashed against the parapet of an overbridge and caught fire. As Samuel was trapped inside the vehicle, he was charred to death.
Nalattinputhur police have registered a case.
