Christian Medical College’s (CMC) Principal Alfred Job Daniel emphasised that medical profession was not a way of making a living but a true way of life.

Graduation day

“The concept of caregiver is fast disappearing. Patients come to physicians as clients and health care professionals are seen as skilled professionals delivering a commodity. This is a calling, a vocation and a mandate,” he told students at the graduation day of Schieffelin Institute of Health-Research and Leprosy Centre, Karigiri on Friday.

He said that students should realise where they are, know where they want to be and know how to get there. “You need to have an ambition in life and see how to get there,” he added.

Mannam Ebenezer, director of the institute urged the students to practice their competency with high quality, pay attention to details in the task, be honest and never leave a task incomplete.

“You should practice your profession with empathy and practice team work as you will not work alone in health care,” he said.

In medical field, education is never over, he said, adding, “Keep updating and reading as it will help in not only retaining knowledge and skills but learn new knowledge. There is a great need for healthcare professionals in India.”

Students who had completed various diploma and degree courses received their certificates on the occasion.
