Power tariff hike: Farm subsidy will be Rs. 3,000 crore

20.47 lakh agricultural connections will continue to receive free power supply

Power subsidy for agricultural connections will hereafter be around Rs. 3,000 crore a year. As many as 20.47 lakh agricultural connections will continue to receive free supply, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said in a statement.

The government’s subsidy for 1.6 crore domestic consumers would be around Rs. 2,714 crore a year, an increase of Rs. 825 crore from the present level.

About 11.83 lakh huts enjoy free power supply. The annual subsidy will be Rs. 224.54 crore. Now, power is supplied free to handloom and powerloom units that consume up to 100 units and 500 units bimonthly.

The overall annual subsidy to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) will go up from Rs. 4,985 crore to Rs. 6,295 crore. In the last three-and-a-half years, the government’s financial assistance, including subsidy and equity contribution to the Tangedco, was Rs. 35,830 crore, Mr. Panneerselvam said.
