No subsidy for those consuming more than 500 units
The tariff revision proposed by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) envisages a hike ranging from 74 per cent to over 110 per cent for domestic consumers.
In the tariff revision application filed with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) on Thursday, the TANGEDCO has proposed a hike of 74 per cent for people consuming up to 200 units, 94 per cent for those consuming up to 500 units and 113 per cent for those consuming above 500 units.
Of the 1.40 crore domestic consumers in the State, 79 lakh consume less than 100 units and 30 lakh fall in the category consuming 101 to 200 units.
The tariff revision petition has also proposed drastic changes in the slab system for domestic consumers. The existing five-tier slab system will make way for a three-tier system, as per the tariff petition. A senior official of TANGEDCO said the number of slabs in the proposed tariff and the subsidy for domestic consumers has been reduced, so that domestic consumers would exercise economy.
Government subsidy, which is being enjoyed by all domestic consumers irrespective of the consumption, has been proposed to be reduced with no subsidy for those consuming more than 500 units.
While for customers consuming up to 200 units the rate per unit has been fixed at Rs. 2 with the government giving subsidy of 1 rupee, it will be fifty paise per unit for the next slab of 201 to 500 units, with the subsidy displayed in the bill of the consumer.
The production cost increases year after year. While the production cost is Rs. 5.31 per unit, the realisation is only Rs. 3.81 per unit. The gap of Rs. 1.50 per unit is proposed to be bridged by the proposed tariff revision covering all consumers, he added.

Will all the money charged by the increase in tariff are really going to clear the TNEB debts? If it is, then I agree to this hike. But I really doubt!!
the free connection to the EB staffs to be scrapped., because they were paid for the work they do.. similarly for the telephone departments too. does the bank staffs were given free money because they work in the bank???? it gives much loss for the nation and to the state..
free electricity to the farmers is one of the foolish decisions of our state. some of the farmers are well rich and they have bungalows, acres of lands and much more. for example., "we have only one house and is to be shared by all my siblings and we have to pay the electricity bill without subsidiaries; while the farmers who have bungalows, business and acres of land will get free electricity.. their assets are almost 10 times larger than ours."
I would advise our CM to instruct the TNEB to supply one lantern to each
family so that our entire state will look like the primitive tenements
Another one the public meeting by the political parties should be
totally banned so that free use of power will come to a knot. Will she
do it?
it is very bad practice in India by politicians they use public money in politically motivated expenses like t.n.purchase at high rate and sale in very low rate they are making losses without any reason . in u.p. madam c m is busy tax payer money for making political garden and her own statue she is not paying money to low cost purchase of electric from power trading companies Tamil Nadu is also state that doing like u.p
Middle class families residing at rented houses will be affected very severely due to the hike in the power tariff. In Chennai, the tenants are at present charged more than Rs.4/- per unit by house owners according to the sub-meter fixed by them. The sub-meters are not checked and are almost faulty and they run faster. The tenants are not able to complain about their house owners. In a building or house, 2 to 10 families are living. There is only one E.B. meter is in that building or house. How is it possible to consume the power not more than 100 or 500 units for two months by such number of families. It is surprise to note why the Govt. officers do not think of it. Kindly take an appropriate action before increasing the power tariff.
You know one thing only 16% Chennai population gets Hygienic Food and water? For a person it is mandatory to have 150 Lits/Day but CMC provides 12 Lits/Day/person. Why the Govt Not thinking about it? More than 80% people are middle class peoples in TN. Almost all are having two-wheeler, TV, Washing Machine, Maxi, and Grinder (Basic Needs). Please do not talk about karalla, because more than 70% , min one person from family is working in foreign or other states, so comparing karalla and tamilnadu is not going to project any thing. Already the TN state Govt. Not having any support from Central, so they decided to go for the state of forcing the innocent peoples to pay for their plan.
Why so much hike is proposed ? to be worried by every one, - Why free supply to be gievn, in addtion to subsidy provision ? - Is it commercial power tarif under control ? - Is it electrcity board expenditure is under control. like 1) Employees salary strucure, 2) power generation cost, 3) Maintenance cost, 4) Transport cost, 5) Over head, 6) Employees Productivity, 7) Purchase cost of Material .
Uncontrolled price of food items, abnormal increase in Public Transport Cost, milk Cost have altready caused huge suffering with people . Power Cost increase is applied will put the society deep crisis . Hence Power cost increase should not be thinked at this situation.
Subsidy on energy in electric form need not be given as it is already very cheap than crude oil form of energy. however i agree that it is a birth right to consume 100 units per month on a family of four and no charges should be taken by any govt. but if it exceeds more than
1200 units per annum from 01april to 31march then no and connection dismantle for next three years and commercial connection at 5.75 per unit will be given.
The subsidies should be restricted to only those who consumes less than 100 units a month and marginal farmers. The high cost power purchase during lean periods should be restricted to those who are willing to share the price difference.
The tariff hike talks about 500 units and above as Rs.5.75. This can be restricted to band 500 to 1000 units. The consumption pattern has changed now and What about the consumers who lavishly spend more than 1000 units and let the tariff be hiked to Rs.7.00 for them. Electricity is a rationed & subsidized commodity and that too is slipping more between the cup & lip now. So let us all be rational to effectively use energy for essential purposes only and not for lavish comforts. The more, the consumer grabs from the common pool, the more he has to shell out. Indirectly, this will promote electricity conservation among guzzlers. Electricity can be conserved at the bottom of pyramid by education. But the same electricity can be conserved more by logical reasoning on running Air conditioners for many hours of the day. So conservation is common to all and is applied to everyone in the society. The conservation to be thrusted more in the segment where electricity is wasted more unknowingly.
In the Bi-monthly consumption Table the second slab states that charge for 400 units is Rs.1300. But when we calculate for 400 units according to the slab rates, it is worked out to be Rs.1100 only. What does the difference of Rs. 200 mean? I don't understand it. Does it mean fixed amount? Similarly the third slab also has a difference of Rs.350 between actual calculation according to the slab rate. Here also have we to take the difference as fixed charges as found in the present tariff scheme? The govt. should make certain conditions for the free supply of power for agriculture as there are misapplication and misappropriation of power by many farmers. The supply should be regularised so that only genuine farmers should avail the govt.'s gesture. Will the government look into this and do justice?
Is there any thinking about how to achieve TNEB's mission " powering Tamilnadu's progress" and vision " providing quality and reliable power at competitive rates". As no strategy planned in line with vision and mission, gradually and systematically we have been pushed into deep crisis. The pity is we do not even have a credible crisis management. If government organization is bankrupt then just imagine the fate of hundreds of businesses that are supporting it. Broken-down and buried. Many MNCs stopped investing in the state, many moved to other state for expansion, many waiting for the situation to improve. Not working in the direction set by it's mission, TNEB will be responsible for increasing number of poors.
Free power to farmers is not given immediately on demand. They have to wait for more than 10 years. Even free power is given to the farmers, the expenditure on this head should be covered from the general revenue, and the common man should not be affected. Many farmers use single phase power for agricultural purpose. It is not a luxury. These farmers and home garden growers will be affected by the steep hike. But, there is no way out. We have to bear the cost of power generation.
Stop Free Elec. Stop Power theft. Reduce transmission loss. Privatise the power distribution. Let them do this four things first.
Tariff increase and rations are applicable only for those who are paying for it and for others it is fully free and unlimited supply. Great!!! We the middle class group should form a forum and fight against this.
@sivakumar.. 1.40 customers doesn't mean that persons., it means connections. some houses may have from 3 to 10 members too.. i also wish to let u know., there are around some percentage of houses, that doesnt have E connection...
our govt. gave laptops and so and so.. what is the use., electricity is a basic for poorest to richest.. the laptops are not the life lines of the citizens.. i dont know, when the people and govt. understand the realities and needs..
At one end of the spectrum, state is giving lot of freebies starting
from fan, mixer, grinder and TV to all households and at the other end,
increasing the electric bill. All the above freebies are going to suck
up so much of electric juice. So, now by increasing the bill, govt. is
taking back the amount spent on the freebies...makes more
sense..right..;) ?
My suggestion is to give FREE power of 100 units per month to all METERED
connections to ALL consumers and load the cost of this free power supply in a
graduated scale to those whose consumption exceeds 100 units beyond the first
100 units. This will encourage people to seek Metered connection instead of illegal
tapping which is rampant. Second, a large number of poorer sections of society
[who also vote]will benefit. Third the work load on Electricity board will come down
drastically which should enable them to effectively curb transmission loss. The
richer segment of the society will hopefully be careful in extravagant use of power.
Any takers?
As seen from table, the previous power tariff in TN seems to be least in India. This, might be due to the govt's intentional help to people use ACs due to humid weather at the cost of Power economics of EB. People who use ACs can definitely afford proper tariffs for better performance and improvement of Power system. In my view, the power regulator can fix even higher tariff with firm committment that uninterrupted power supply is available to all which will reduce use of Diesel Generators, Invertor/ UPS. Can we do it?
A day will come in Tamil Nadu, that the middle class have to bore the brunt because of the miss-management of the elected Govts. The Govt, irrespective of the affiliation to the political party, prefers freebies to the so called poor people [ I personally know there are families that have 2 to 3 men working in Arab Countries and who remits more than Rs,50000 per month to their families are poor and they are called even BPL families. They get free ration,TV,Fridge,Wet Grinder, and so on]. If the Govt have's the will and stop the freebies, 50 percent problems will be solved. But they won't stop the freebies, because they know that, this will fetch them vote for coming to power again so that the politicians can mint money by any means.
There is no problem in paying the revised electricity bill, but the Govt should think that if the middle class is targeted in this way,the day is not far away that these middle class will one day become BPL families and will be a extra burden to the future Govts.
Increase in power tariff will make sure that people use electricity more resourcefully. It is a welcoming decision that no subsidy is provided for 500 units +. At last rich pay something more.
This data hides more than it reveals. How much of the power distributed
by the TNEB is distributed among
households,agriculture,commercial/industrial sectors and what is the
respective share in revenue. Is TNEB subsidizing agriculture or not is
the question. Why should all farmers irrespective of land holdings be
entitled to free electricity.Even if TNEB collects for 20% of the
consumption by this sector it will be able to reduce revenue gap.
The proposed rate hike is good when compared to other states, But why dont we
stay a role model to other states rather than increasing the tariff?

CM is yet to come up with Credible Power generation plan. Increasing
cost of the consumption may keep a check on quantity but not for long.
By the way, the statistics provided looks like some ten years old. A RTI
application across the EB district headquarters would help identify the
under reported numbers.
Let TANGEDCO charge this proposed rate. But TNEB should take all-out efforts to reduce the transmission loss and the same be made accountable for the mammoth loss incurred at present in all respects. Let the rate be competitive with other states / private suppliers.
Power theft should be controlled with an iron hand. Political parties should not be allowed to tap electricity freely for their meetings. This should be applied to ruling party also. Free power should be metered, so that misuse can be detected.
@C S Sivakumar: Population is different from the Electricity connection.. Population consists of all the members in the family. But the e. connection used to be taken per family.
@ C S SivaKumar: 1.40 crore connections are referred as 1.40 crore houses. Family members differ in each family. On average you can say 3 members in each family.
But coming to the point this is a sudden steep increase which nobody expected. It may affect middle class families budget. At the same time it makes people not to waste electricity since it's costlier now.
Madam: Stop giving freebies at the expense of middle class people like us. let all the politicians if they want to give freebies to the poor, let them give it form their pockets by harassing the middle class. I feel ashamed that only our state is giving the most freebies than any other state in the country.
At least now after the steep "tariff-hike" in Electricity charges in Tamilnadu, let those protesters of commissioning of Koodankulam NP Plant give up their agitation and accept the need of Captive Generation to augment the Power needs. Let also the Govt. headed by Jayalalithaa convince the agitators and assist the authorities to start the Koodankulam NP Plant at the earliest.
It is also very important that power thefts from all sorts of urban and rural customers be kept in check.
Only 14 million domestic users ? makes sense one household/user would have 3-4 person so max 56 million but still less then total population of 76 million. We have electrified almost all parts of our state so this 14 million is not clear to me.....
In Kerala, a consumer state, the tariff without accounting duty and surcharge is Rs 1.70 (upto 100 units) and 2.40 upto 200 monthly consumption. In Tamilnadu existing rates are comparatively low. In Kerala, they even do not have enough street lights and very few industries. Now fridge, Ac, washing machine, cooking range, mixer, grinder and many such appliances people use. we should have the mentality to pay taxes and reasonable price for the services. Comparing to Petrol price, these are not much. The proposed revision, they may modify - lower consumption, slabs can be increased and rates also can be reduced.
There shouldn't be any subsidized tariff once you pass 500 units. Those who use more than 500 units should be forced to pay Rs 5.75 starting from unit 1. This will enforce the users to use the electricity responsively.
It is really surprising to note out of a total TN 6 crore population only 1.40 crore people use electricity,it is a very low incorrect data. Our state is fully elctrified and how can be such a low statistics. It is time the authorities concerned and the concerned Ministry wake up and take necessary steps and take appropriate action and find out the wide gap between user statistics and the population data, it can not be, and it only shows power theft is heavy and causing a great loss to TNEB. So our astute CM Madam J must take action on this false figure. Appeal to Madam J, please take all necessary steps from your side to start the Koodankulam NP plant
