Poverty-stricken widow kills children, self

A widow killed her two children by poisoning them and committed suicide near Kadayam on Monday night due to abject poverty.

Police said Kumar (38), a washerman from Agampillaikulam under Kadayam police station limits, died two months ago. After the sudden demise of her husband, Kumar’s wife Kavitha (32) was struggling to feed her children Saranya (4) and Navin (3) due to poverty. Even though Kumar’s parents helped her financially on and off, the family had to starve at times.

Upset over this, Kavitha, after administering poison to the children on Monday night, consumed it herself in her hut.

The matter came to light when the hut remained closed on Tuesday morning. On opening it, Kumar’s parents and neighbours found the dead bodies of the woman and her children lying on a mat.

Kadayam police sent the bodies to Ambasamudram Government Hospital for post-mortem.
