RAMANATHAPURAM
A portion of a sunshade at the government school building near Mandapam collapsed on Tuesday morning following rains that lashed Rameswaram island for a few hours.
Police said the mishap occurred at Mandapam Panchayat Union Government Elementary School, where about 65 children were studying, around 6 a.m. No one was injured in the mishap, the police said.
Sources said the school had been functioning since 1982. The school building was renovated about one and a half years ago at a cost of about ₹1 lakh.
On information, Chief Educational Officer K. Munusamy inspected the school building and shifted the classes to a nearby community hall.
The CEO said he had written to Public Works Department to inspect and assess the stability of the building. For now, the school would function from the community hall, he said.
