April 16, 2011 11:31 pm | Updated 11:31 pm IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

Pon. Radhakrishnan, State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Saturday visited the houses of three fishermen of Rameswaram, whose bodies were washed ashore in different locations under mysterious circumstances.

He met the relatives and friends of Victus, Anthony Raj and John Paul and offered condolences. Mr. Radhakrishnan enquired about the circumstances that led to the “mysterious” deaths.

They said that State and Central governments did not come to the rescue of the fishermen, who were missing since April 2. In spite of their repeated demands, the authorities failed to launch rescue operations quickly.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the government must take the responsibility for the deaths. Besides taking steps to find the missing boat, the heirs of the fishermen should be offered government jobs.

Later, Mr. Radhakrishnan handed over cash assistance of Rs.1 lakh each to the families of the fishermen on behalf of the party.

K. Muralidharan, national committee member, BJP and others accompanied him.
