Polling was absolutely peaceful with no tension or poll-related violence reported from any part of the State, Director General of Police Bhola Nath said on Wednesday.

“No member of the public or political party lodged any complaint with the police. Adequate security arrangements paved the way for free and fair polling. I congratulate all police officers and men for rising up to the occasion,” Mr. Bholanath told reporters shortly after polling came to an end.

Elaborate security is in place at 234 counting centres located in 91 buildings in Tamil Nadu.

“We are retaining 17 companies of Central paramilitary forces for this purpose. Teams of Striking Forces would be stationed at vantage points to counter emergencies,” the Director General of Police said.

Rs.40 crore seized

Mr. Bhola Nath said that the police seized Rs. 40 crore during surprise checks. It was deposited in local treasuries and Income Tax officials would investigate.

As many as 6,295 cases pertaining to violation of the model code of conduct have been registered.

Asked whether a majority of police personnel on election duty could exercise their franchise, Mr. Bhola Nath said that steps were taken to facilitate voting through postal ballot.
