Poll set aside

March 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

The Principal District Court has set aside the election of Kallur Panchayat president in Thiruvadanai Panchayat Union in the district, holding that he had filed a false affidavit when the elections to local bodies were held in 2011.

U. Moorthy, who unsuccessfully contested the election, challenged the election of S. Muthu as president of Kallur panchayat on the ground that he had given false declaration that he owed no dues to banks when he had availed loans from State Bank of India (SBI).

Allowing the petition, Principal District Judge T. Pon Prakash set aside the election of Muthu, nominated by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) but contested the election on independent symbol.

Mr. Moorthy said he had pointed out the false declaration when the nominations were taken up for scrutiny and demanded its rejection, but the election officer turned down his demand and allowed Muthu to contest the elections.

Senior advocate P. Natarajan appeared for the petitioner.
