DMK chief M. Karunanidhi expressed his condolences on the death of S.R. Nathan, former President of Singapore and close aide of Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on Monday.
Nathan, who also served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States and Malaysia, died at the age of 92 on August 22 after his health deteriorated.
‘A friend of workers’Stating that Nathan worked for making workers’ lives better, he said that he contributed a lot for Singapore’s growth and success. “I express my deepest condolences to S.R. Nathan’s family and the people of Singapore for this loss on behalf of the DMK,” he said.
PMK founder S. Ramadoss said that he was shocked and pained to hear the news of Nathan’s death. “Serving as Singapore’s President from 1999 to 2011, S.R. Nathan led Singapore in such a way that it didn’t affect its growth even as economies around the world were affected,” he noted.
Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani said Nathan supported former PM Lee Kuan Yew’s policies that helped Singapore progress as a nation. “He continued to take part in programmes organised by Tamils and other communities even after retiring from the President’s post,” said K. Veeramani.
He said that Nathan’s death was a loss not just for Singapore but also Tamils around the world.
