RAMANATHAPURAM
Asserting that police would act tough on criminals, N. Kamini, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Ramanathapuram range), has said criminals and history-sheeters would be categorised.
Talking to reporters here on Monday after visiting Valantharavai, where two persons were murdered by a gang, Ms. Kamini said categorisation of criminals, based on the gravity of the offences committed by them and the number of cases they faced, would be done in the range comprising Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts to check anti-social activities.
This would help the police easily maintain surveillance over criminals and keep track of their movements, she said.
She said only after the Valantharavai murders she gathered details of Dharma and his brother Karthik, who had been involved in criminal activities for several years since they were juveniles. The gang rivalry which led to the double murder had been continuing since their father’s days and it was disappointing that the duo had been ‘running free’ all these years, she said.
It was necessary for the DIGs who were posted in the district to get a clear picture of criminals and their activities. Details of the criminals stopped at the office of the SP and never reached the office of the DIG, she said. “I will categorise the criminals and create a system within the next 10 days”, she said.
Reports of suspected nexus between the police and the criminals, especially of the personnel attached to Kenikarai police station, were disturbing, she said.
