A day after the body of a Class V schoolgirl was found hanging from a tree in Perumal Kovil Karadu near Vazhapadi, the district police are clueless on the motive of the murder, but said it could be a case of sexual assault.

Superintendent of Police R. Sakthivel, who conducted an inquiry in the victim’s village in Chendrampalayam on Sunday told The Hindu that five special teams were formed to investigate the case. He ruled out the possibility of human sacrifice.

Quoting a two-member doctor team, which conducted the post-mortem at Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital on Saturday evening, Mr. Sakthivel said no external injuries were found on the body, but suspects “it could be a case of rape. The autopsy report would be available in two days,” he added.

The girl along with her siblings and parents had gone to sleep around 11 p.m. She was found missing at 5 a.m. on Saturday by her mother.
