The Thoraippakkam police on Wednesday traced and rescued a two-year-old boy who was kidnapped from Kallukuttai, Perungudi, a fortnight ago.

One of the accused was arrested in Thiruverkadu, the police said. Gurusamy and his wife Premalatha lodged a police complaint on December 25 stating their child was missing. The father said the child was kidnapped by an unknown person while he was playing outside his house.

The police launched a hunt to trace the boy and nab the accused.

Initially, the police were clueless as CCTV footage obtained from a pawn shop and an electronic shop in the vicinity showed the boy following a man. The identity of the man could not be immediately established.

After analysing the footage, they found that two men were roaming on a bike in the area where the child was playing on the street.

However, the bike’s number was not clear. Based on other clues from the footage, the owner was identified as Mahendran, a resident of Kallukuttai.

On interrogation, he told the police that he was on the bike in the area with his friend, Manickam, 28, a resident of Thiruverkadu.

Following his version, the police traced Manickam later. Subsequently, the police traced the boy at Manickam’s house in Thiruverkadu on Wednesday morning and rescued him.

During interrogation, Manickam told the police that he and his wife married three years ago and did not have children. He visited his mother in Kallukuttai and, on returning home, had a drink with his friend Mahendran. The boy, who was playing on the street, had followed Manickam, who took the boy to his house with the intention of raising him.

Manickam was arrested and sent to judicial custody.
