The police have obtained a court summons for S.P. Udayakumar, coordinator of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) .

The summons issued by the Judicial Magistrate, Valliyur, was served on Mr. Udayakumar’s father, S. Paramarthalinga Marthandam, at Esankanvilai on Parakkai Road, three km from here by a team of 15 police personnel.

The situation was tense in the coastal areas of Kanyakumari district after the summons was served directing Mr. Udayakumar and his wife Meera Kumar to appear before the judicial magistrate at Valliyur on September 18 at 10.00 a.m.

The charges mentioned offences under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Religious Institutions (Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1998.

Mr. Marthandam received three summonses (two in the name of Mr. Udayakumar and one in his wife’s name). He declined to sign some other papers as requested by the police. The police personnel inspected the surrounding areas to check for Mr. Udayakumar’s presence.

Fishermen living in 18 out of 48 coastal villages from Arockiyapuram to Neerodi did not venture into the sea.
