A woman victim, who lost ₹44,000 to a phishing fraud, got back ₹22,000, thanks to the prompt action taken by Virudhunagar district police.

Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan said on Monday that the swift action by Cyber Crime police helped the woman, Karthik (35) of Narikudi, get back her money. He said Cyber Crime police managed to reach the online sellers and e-wallet service providers on time.

The woman, who is a cattle farmer, did not remember when she had given in to the designs of the person who had called her to get the bank account details.

“Since March, the trickster had been withdrawing small amounts of money from her account, which was not noticed by the victim,” a police officer said.

However, recently the woman found that bigger amounts like ₹1,500 and ₹1,000 had been vanishing from her account, and lodged a complaint with the SP.

“Just as she lodged the complaint, we found the diversion of money from her account to some e-wallets created in fake names. And the money had been used for recharging mobile phones and payments to online stores,” the officer said.

The Cyber Crime police contacted the online stores and asked them to stop delivery of goods ordered by the accused. They also contacted the e-wallet service providers to transfer back the money to her bank account.

The police managed to get back ₹8,000 to her and block another ₹14,000, which would reach her soon. The woman thanked the SP for the prompt action.
