Days after a woman techie was murdered at a railway station and another committed suicide after her morphed picture was uploaded on Facebook, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Tamil Nadu police, alleging it had failed to protect the common man.
“I urge the police department to also engage themselves in giving protection to the ordinary people and strongly condemn them for not doing so,” he said.
Referring to the suicide of a young woman in Salem after her morphed picture was uploaded on Facebook, Mr. Karunanidhi said the police department should not think that just providing security to those in power and monitoring the activities of the Opposition parties was their work.
The police had faced flak for the suicide, with the victim’s parents alleging inaction and demand for bribe.
The DMK chief also referred to Madras High Court’s directive to Tamil Nadu government over the issue and several queries it had raised on security aspects.
Mr. Karunanidhi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families of both women.
