Poachers recently shot dead a 16-year-old elephant and removed its tusks in Aasanur range in Sathyamangalam forest division in Erode district. The incident, which could have occurred two to three days ago, came to light after forest personnel found the carcass of the elephant at Koilkaraipallam in Aasanur forest range on Wednesday, according to District Forest Officer N. Satheesh.

Mr. Satheesh said that a special squad was formed to nab the poachers, who, he claimed, might be from Karnataka. Arrangements were made to conduct a post-mortem, he added.
