The Pattali Makkal Katchi will decide on alliance for the 2016 Assembly polls at that time, G.K. Mani, party president, told reporters here on Wednesday.

“There is plenty of time for the elections. We will decide about alliance that time,” he said.

Mr. Mani was here for the party’s general body meeting.

On the PMK leadership’s poser on which parties were members of the NDA, he clarified that it was a general statement that was blown out of proportion.

He said the meeting was held to come up with an organisational set-up for the party as it was fundamental to facing the Assembly polls. “There will be committees at the village level to work on various aspects.”

‘Bifurcate large districts’

Mr. Mani urged the government to bifurcate large districts such as Vellore, Salem and Coimbatore. The government recently announced the creation of new taluks for administrative reasons so that the schemes could reach people quickly. “For instance, a large district like Vellore can be bifurcated, with Tirupattur being another district.” he said.

Mr. Mani stressed need to promote micro, small and medium industries in the State and urged the government to procure grinders and mixers for its free scheme from local manufacturers. There were close to one crore unemployed graduates in the State. “The government should take measures on a war footing to solve unemployment.”

The government should take steps to see that private sugarcane mills paid the amount fixed by the government - Rs. 3,000 a tonne - to farmers. “The mills are paying Rs. 400 less a tonne. Arrears should also be paid to farmers,” he said

Mr. Mani also reiterated need to bring in prohibition in the State, take steps to prevent illegal sand mining in Vellore and Kancheepuram and develop backward districts such as Vellore, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai.
