The Pattali Makkal Katchi has appealed to the Centre to take steps for initiating a probe sponsored by the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) into the “war crimes and human rights violations of the Mahindra Rajapaksa government against the Sri Lankan Tamils in the last phase of the civil war.”
The Government of India should impress upon the UNHRC the need to hold such a probe in Chennai to facilitate fearless participation by Sri Lankan Tamil refugees and members of the Tamil Diaspora, the PMK said in an extraordinary resolution, seeking to put its ally, BJP, in a spot on the island-Tamils issue.
The resolution was passed by the party’s executive committee here on Wednesday. It welcomed the initiative taken by the UNHRC to conduct the probe into the “atrocities.”
The Rajapaksa government had opposed such a probe, and this stand would deny justice to the Tamils. Therefore, the right place for conducting such an investigation would be Chennai, the resolution said. As India had the moral responsibility to get justice to the Sri Lankan Tamils, the Centre must hold talks with the UNHRC to conduct the probe in Chennai.
In another resolution, the meeting, chaired by its leader S. Ramadoss, urged the Narendra Modi government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery River Authority without delay.
In yet another resolution, the party condemned the ruling AIADMK’s alleged attempt to gag criticism by foisting false cases on Opposition leaders.
