With the Security Review Committee (SRC) stating that PMK leaders S. Ramadoss and his son Anbumani Ramadoss did not face any threat from any quarters warranting police protection, party president G. K. Mani has moved the Madras High Court again, this time challenging the panel’s decision.
Justice K. K. Sasidharan on Monday ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu government, returnable by two weeks.
Initially, Mr. Mani filed a petition seeking a direction to the authorities to provide adequate police protection to the two leaders and the court on September 6 directed the State government to convene the SRC meeting to decide on the threat perception in the light of the sworn affidavits by Dr. Ramadoss and Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. Accordingly, a meeting was held and in a communication dated September 28, the Tamil Nadu Home Secretary said the committee was of the unanimous opinion that “it was not essential to provide security since it was unequivocally clear that both Dr. Ramadoss and Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss did not face any threat from any quarter, warranting the same. Further, the committee was of the view that adequate security arrangements may be provided by the local police whenever the need arose for both of them, in accordance with the requirements of local exigencies.”
In the present petition, Mr. Mani submitted that the committee’s decision was “totally biased” and “malafide” and had been taken with an “ulterior motive for political reasons.” Hence, it was illegal. The reason could not be accepted, because the Tamil Nadu government had been giving a round-the-clock security for nearly 15 years, which itself showed the need and necessity to continue the protection.
