The PMK has challenged the summons issued to it by the Commissioner of Revenue Administration (CRA) in a matter relating to recouping the loss of Rs. 4.44 crore for the alleged drop in sale of liquor in Tasmac shops in Salem district between April 30 and May 15.
In the petition, the party president, G.K. Mani, said the Senior Regional Officer/District Manager in charge, Tasmac, Salem, filed an application before the CRA under the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act claiming a purported loss in 264 Tasmac shops in Salem district for the drop in the sale of IMFL. The applicant referred to the Chithirai Thiruvizha held by the PMK and Vanniar Sangam at Mamallapuram on April 25 this year and the subsequent developments due to which a tense situation prevailed in Salem district from April 30. The public found it difficult to go out in the evenings for their routine shopping and transport services were restricted.
A Tasmac shop was set on fire. Apart from this, between April 30 and May 15 due to the situation, liquor shops could not be kept opened for long time. They had to be closed at 6 pm at various places. In the light of this, the Tasmac official had requested the CRA to recoup the loss from the political party and the Vanniar Sangam, the application alleged. The CRA issued summons to the petitioner who appeared through counsel on July 30 and sought time.
